ab 1955

What it does: Enacted on July 15, 2024 in the State of California, AB 1955 prohibits school districts and county offices of education from requiring school staff to inform parents or guardians of their student’s sexual orientation or gender identity without the students permission.

What it means: If your student comes out at school or decides to change their gender identity, school staff may not be allowed to tell you without your child’s consent. Furthermore, all existing policies requiring parental notification are nullified.

For educators: While this bill means schools cannot require you to notify parents of their student’s gender identity, it does not expressly prohibit you from doing so. Look in to your school district’s specific policies to learn what rules have been set in place.

cuhsd policy 5157

What it does: Adopted on April 12, 2022, Central Union High School District Policy 5157 outlines the district’s transgender policies.

What it means: Students must be educated on sexual orientation and gender / Gender is determined solely by what a student feels and may not be questioned / Staff may not misgender students / Schools may usually not notify parents of their student’s transgender status / Staff is advised to trick parents by using actual pronouns around them rather than student’s new pronouns / Biologically male students may use girl’s restrooms, locker rooms, and overnight rooms on school trips

For educators: Be aware the district is paying attention to the use of pronouns.
